What is Affordable housing in Chicago (subsidized)?
The dataset includes housing developments and buildings that are receive a subsidy from the City of Chicago or are monitored for compliance with some regulation (especially the Affordable Requirements Ordinance, or ARO).
DOH is responsible for tracking where and how many affordable dwelling units are created or supported through government funding or due to City ordinances, like the Affordable Requirements Ordinance (ARO). It also includes HUD Section 202 funding for low-income senior housing; many developments labeled "Multifamily" are supported by the Low Income Housing Trust Fund's rental subsidy program (for households with very low incomes) or Multi-year Affordability through Upfront Investment (MAUI), which are interest-free forgivable loans.
This dataset does not include housing owned by the Chicago Housing Authority.
Source
The Chicago Department of Housing provides the data via the Chicago data portal.
The City of Chicago describes this dataset: "The list is updated periodically when construction is completed for new projects or when the compliance period for older projects expire, typically after 30 years. The list is provided as a courtesy to the public. It does not include every City-assisted affordable housing unit that may be available for rent, nor does it include the hundreds of thousands of naturally occurring affordable housing units located throughout Chicago without City subsidies."
