The City of Chicago issued 1,364 more building permits in 2017 than in 2016, an increase of 2.9 percent. That’s also an increase of 5.4 percent, or 2,548 building permits, over 2015.

The largest permit category gain was for elevators, with an additional 216 permits, or a 15.4 percent increase over 2016. That’s probably for all the new high rise apartment buildings that started construction in 2016 and 2017.
There were only 11 more new construction permits in 2017 than in 2016, and 317 more renovation permits. The community area with the largest increase of new construction building permits from 2016 to 2017 was Belmont Cragin, which had 7 in 2016 and 27 in 2017.

On page 4, you can see that 2016 had the highest number of new construction permits issued to within two blocks of a CTA or Metra station, in the last five years, and that 2017 had the second highest number.

- Former Carbit Paints store on North Ave. across from Humboldt Park will be demolished and replaced by a six-story building with 40 apartments; the problem? it’s a contributing building to the city’s historic boulevards, but it’s not protected (Sun-Times)
- The commercial corridor of Chicago Ave. thru West Town hasn’t fuly gentrified yet, according to some business owners, with one saying rents are half the cost as in Wicker Park, but it appears to be well on its way (Sun-Times)

- Vermilion Development is headed to the Evanston Planning & Development Committee on Monday, 1/8, to try and get approval for its 33-story mixed-use proposal at 601 Davis Street in downtown Evanston, next to the Chase tower. The building would have 318 units and 176 car parking spaces, making it a TOD, as it’s only 1,200 feet away from the CTA’s Davis Purple Line station. The building is designed by SCB of Chicago.
