Our building permits data helped Crain's show the community areas with the most residential activity last year

Chicago Cityscape crunched the numbers for Crain’s to show which community areas in Chicago had the most building permits issued for new construction and demolition in residential zones.

When you look at the community areas in order of building permits issued, the patterns from 2014 to 2015 to 2016 are largely the same: the top 10 community areas in each year remains the same and they are swapping positions in that top 10.

What also is the same is that new construction follows demolitions in north side neighborhoods.

“In several Chicago neighborhoods where lots of homes got torn down in 2016, new construction followed right behind.
Not so in West Englewood, where more residential permits were issued during the year than in any other city neighborhood, but almost none resulted in a new home being built.”
