Last year the Illinois General Assembly adopted a bill (SB 15) that transitions Chicago Public Schools to have an entirely elected school board. On election day, November 5, 2024, Chicagoans will get to vote for 10 school board candidates, one for each district.
Chicago Cityscape now has the “elected representative school board” districts in its database. The ERSB districts, and subdistricts, will appear in Surrounding Places in each Property Report lookup, and in each Place Report for another type of place (for example, look up a ward to see which ERSB districts are overlapping).

During the transition period, the Mayor of Chicago will appoint 10 board members and a board president, for a total of 21 board members. Each district has two subdistricts. The mayor will need to appoint a board member in the subdistrict opposite of the elected candidate. Then, in 2026, voters must elect members for each of the subdistricts represented by an appointed member (it’s possible an appointed member runs for election).
